5 Reasons I Recommend Getting Engagement Photos
If you’re getting married in the next year, you’ve probably at least thought about engagement photos. While not everyone gets engagement photos taken, It can be a really fun and helpful time for you and your partner as you prepare for married life. Here are my top 5 reasons why I always recommend getting engagement photos taken.
Engagement Photos will help you feel more comfortable in front of the camera on your wedding day.
I think this is my FAVORITE reason of all of them. Most people aren’t models, so it’s natural that you wouldn’t immediately be at ease in front of the camera. At your engagement session, you’ll have the chance to spend time getting to know and getting comfortable with your photographer. It’s like a low-risk dry run for your wedding photos! During that time, you can communicate things you like and what you don’t.
Whether it’s understanding which poses feel better for you and which ones you don’t want on your wedding day to just knowing which is your “good side” (everybody has one), an engagement session is a great way to ease in to the process of being photographed.
2. Engagement photos help you understand your photographer’s style
Engagement photos can be a good opportunity to work with your photographer and get a sense of their style and approach before the wedding day. Being photographed means there’s one less “unknown” in the equation when it comes time for your wedding day, relieving stress. Because you’ve already worked with them to create photos, you’ll be able to know what to expect and have a better connection with your wedding photographer, leading to a more enjoyable experience and better photos.
That rapport goes a long way. Many of my clients say it’s like by the time their wedding day comes around, it’s almost like spending time with a friend than just another vendor and that always makes me so happy to hear.
3. They can also be used as a way to announce your engagement to friends and family
This was so funny to me at the time, but my wife is from a small town and her family used one of our photos for an announcement in the local newspaper. While I don’t think that’s the most common use, there are so many fun ways you can use your engagement photos to announce your engagement to friends and family.
Many couples share their engagement photos on social media or use them in their wedding invitations and save the dates. While we all take plenty of selfies, getting engaged is a great excuse to get professional photos taken that will feel special and fun when sharing with others.
4. They can serve as a memento of this special time in your life.
Engagement photos can be a way to document and remember the excitement and happiness of this time in your relationship. Being young and in love is such a precious and special experience. I feel ancient saying that, but having been married for over 10 years, I can see how true it really is. Getting engagement photos taken gives you a beautiful way to capture that specialness and freeze that memory to look back on and enjoy in the years to come.
We loved our engagement photos so much because they were us in our “normal” clothes in very editorial settings that just felt natural to who we were. It was so fun to have these images to remember being young, in love, and feeling ready to take on the world as a team together. And you deserve to feel that way too!
5. They’re handy to have available for a guestbook and another decor for your wedding.
It’s just practical, as you may want to have them handy for your wedding reception as a way to add personal touches to the decor or have a guest book created with the photos to make their guestbook extra memorable.
If you’re on the fence about engagement photos, I hope you see how they can be a fun and meaningful way to celebrate your engagement and help you prepare for your wedding day. I’m always such a fan of taking them and would love to work with you to crate photos you’ll be so happy you have and enjoy for years.
