As we step into 2024, the world of wedding photography continues to evolve, bringing forth new trends that redefine the art of capturing love and celebrating unions. This year, couples are embracing a mix of innovative techniques and timeless styles to create unforgettable memories. Let's explore the top wedding photography trends for 2024 that I expect we will see all over that Pinterest feed this year

1. Drone Shots- Elevating Love from Above

Drones are taking the wedding photography scene by storm, capturing breathtaking aerial views of ceremonies, receptions, and the stunning landscapes that surround them. The unique angles and sweeping vistas add a cinematic touch, creating visually stunning images that will leave couples and their guests in awe and add another perspective to really round out the wedding day narrative.

2. Direct Flash Dominance

Direct flash photography, a trend that gained momentum in 2023, continues to shine in 2024. The bold and dramatic lighting created by direct flash adds a touch of glamour to wedding photos. This technique enhances details, highlights emotions, and creates a highly editorial effect. Wedding photographers are really leaning direct flash to produce striking and unforgettable images throughout the day and especially at the wedding reception.

3. Lo-Fi Film Photos

I am seeing more and more grainy and intentionally underexposed lower fidelity film images. These may be captured by a disposable or lower-quality film camera or professional 355mm film camera. Brit + Co said it well:

“Nostalgia is definitely the biggest factor playing into the rise of film and lo-fi photography. Not only is there a dated look to the actual images, but the process entails a tactile experience that’s unlike anything my generation has encountered. It’s kind of like how vinyls and tapes became popular to have on hand again.”

4. Documentary Style Photography

Couples are increasingly gravitating towards documentary-style photography that captures the authentic, unscripted moments of their special day. This approach focuses on storytelling, with photographers discreetly documenting the genuine emotions, interactions, and candid moments that unfold throughout the wedding without inserting themselves and controlling the scene.

When done well, the result is a collection of images that feels immediate and urgent, focusing more on expressions than carefully curated compositions.

5. Bubble Exits, A Whimsical and Safe Alternative to Sparklers:

In 2024, bubble exits are stealing the spotlight as a whimsical and safe alternative to sparklers. With concerns about fire hazards, especially in drought-prone areas, bubbles offer a dreamy and enchanting exit option for couples. The shimmering bubbles create a magical ambiance, allowing photographers to capture the joy and spontaneity of the newlyweds as they embark on their journey together.

6. Eclectic Bridesmaids Dresses: Embracing Individuality and Style:

The era of uniform bridesmaids dresses is giving way to a more eclectic and personalized approach. In 2024, brides are opting for a mix of patterns, colors, and styles, allowing each bridesmaid to showcase her unique personality. The result is a visually dynamic and interesting bridal party, with each member contributing to the overall aesthetic in a way that feels authentic and inclusive.

7. Elopements: Intimate Moments in Picturesque Locations:

The trend of intimate elopements is on the rise, as more couples choose to forgo grand celebrations in favor of intimate, destination-style weddings. Investing in a down payment for a house or allocating funds for travel, couples are opting for smaller, more meaningful ceremonies with a select few loved ones. Elopement-style weddings provide an opportunity for photographers to work closely with couples to capture the essence of love against the backdrop of breathtaking landscapes, creating images that are both intimate and visually stunning.

As we navigate the evolving landscape of wedding photography in 2024, these trends promise to highlight the way we capture and immortalize love in our current era. From the skies with drone shots to the ground with eclectic bridesmaids dresses, each trend adds a unique layer to the visual narrative of weddings, ensuring that every moment is cherished and remembered for years to come in a way that speaks to our current cultural moment.
